ELEUTHERA, BAHAMAS, WINTER 2005
WEEKS 1 &
2
(commenced 12th November 2005)
Sunday 13th Nov. (strong easterly wind):
BfG took the team to
Briland for their first day. The girls went sightseing and had lunch at
the Pink Sands while the boys fished the rising tide. By the time the girls
returned the fish were in close and Elaine had a go with BfG's rod...
Total
bones
for the day... Elaine 1 (3lb), Ian 1 (3½lb), BfG 1 (2½lb), BoneBoy an
amazing 8 to 4lb ...our record for this difficult flat!
Monday 14th Nov. (strong easterly wind):
BfG takes Denis &
Elaine south to a relatively sheltered flat and finds a good school of bones...
...Elaine hooked one but unfortunately lost
it, BfG landed one, Dennis finished up with 3.
...meanwhile the others go back
to Briland but it's not so easy this time. BoneBoy gets just one but BoneAlone
is learning fast and lands two including this one...
Tuesday 15th Nov. (strong easterly wind):
Now
that Dennis & Elaine have both "boned up" BfG takes BoneAlone
exploring up north while BoneBoy takes the rest of the team south but what few
fish they find are very spooky.
Wednesday 16th Nov. (strong easterly wind):
BoneAlone,
Denis & Elaine return to Briland and Dennis hooks a bonefish...
Meanwhile BfG and BoneBoy find some bones
on a windward flat and each hook 5 good fish. Unfortunately most get off but
they each succeed in bringing 2 bones to hand, plus this bonus cowfish...
Thursday 17th Nov. (moderate easterly wind):
BfG
goes south with Dennis & Elaine and finds a big school in deep water.
Elaine hooks and loses one, then the school moves out of casting range. Meanwhile the others are
having a good day up north...
Friday 18th Nov. (strong easterly wind again!):
BoneBoy and BoneGirl find the fish Sea-side
Saturday 19th Nov. (moderate easterly wind):
Sunday 20th Nov. (moderate easterly wind):
Monday 21st Nov. (southerly wind & heavy
showers):
At long last, after 9 days of easterly winds, the wind
now blows from the south, making the Ocean side fishable so BfG & BoneAlone
head off south...
Tuesday 22nd Nov. (gale force north-westerly
wind):
Just when they think the weather has changed for the better
a cold front moves down from Canada and churns up the water
on both sides of the island...
...no fish to be seen, even in sheltered bays
- they must have moved off into deeper water.
Wednesday 23rd Nov. (very strong north-westerly
wind):
The cold wind continues and water clarity
is poor but a few bones are found in sheltered bays. BfG hooks 2 and BoneBoy
lands one.
Thursday 24th Nov. (started calm then strong
north-westerly wind again):
The last evening
for BoneBoy & BoneGirl who leave on Friday...
Friday 25th Nov. (calm):
The last day for Ian,
Denis & Elaine... The girls go to Rainbow beach to sunbathe, see some
bones, drive back to the Inn to get a rod, back to the beach again, find
the fish again, Elaine hooks one, "releases" it immediately...
another excuse to celebrate with some Kaliks while soaking up some more rays...
...and Dennis gets 3, BoneBoy 2 and BfG just one.
Saturday 26th Nov. (NE wind):
Denis & Elaine
relax on their last morning but...
During weeks
1 & 2...
BoneAlone
& BoneBoy each caught the heaviest bonefish: 4lb.
BoneBoy
caught the most in a day: 8,
and the most in a week: 19,
and the most in the
2 weeks: 24.
BoneAlone caught the most during the 2nd week: 12
BfG had
the heaviest average size: 3lb
Elaine
was top lady angler with the most bones (5)
and the heaviest bone
(3lb)
Total for the first 2 weeks: 72 bonefish, including 16 of 3lb or over, all caught on fly.
Also,
of absolutely no importance to anyone...
BfG won the most $$$$ at cards
(again!)
Denis & BoneAlone
fried the most 2-way radios.
